For generations of Blackstone Valley families the familiar slogan Fresh milk - delivered to your door! was synonymous with Bangma's Dairy Farm. Bangma's Farm has a long history in Uxbridge. Louis Bangma Sr. immigrated from the Netherlands just after the turn of the 20th Century. Like his neighbors, Bangma first acquired his land on Williams Hill in Uxbridge in 1924 and then purchased a few Holstein cows. The Bangma family has been farming that land ever since.
Over the years, the farm grew from a small wholesale milk business to one of the largest milk delivery businesses in the area, with a concentration in the Milford and Mendon area. By the year 2000, Bangma's dairy herd had grown to about 200 Holsteins and the milk delivery route included the entire Blackstone Valley.
In 2003, Donald and Michelle Bangma, the third generation to own the farm, decided it was time for a change. Instead of selling out to developers, Don contacted his brother Dale, who agreed to purchase the farm and preserve the rich family heritage. Dale and his wife Pamela have always raised a few beef cattle of their own, raising them the natural way on sweet green grass, and all natural grains. While discontinuing onsite milk production, Dale and Pamela have purchased additional Simmental beef cows and a bull and are raising their own herd of cattle, providing all natural, pasture-raised beef for sale in their newly renovated farm store.
"After 80 years it was time for a change" explains Dale. The 80 year-old dairy barns have been completely renovated and now house an expanded farm store and the all new Dairy Bar- serving the finest ice cream treats in the Blackstone Valley.
"We will continue to offer the coldest, freshest milk in glass bottles, we will still carry ice cream, eggs, butter and cheese as we always have. But now, with our expanded floor space, we can offer a wider variety of products, like locally baked breads, fancy pastries, and fresh fruit pies along with some specialty items like buffalo steaks and burgers and a complete line of specialty meats."
Perhaps the most scenic view of the Blackstone Valley is from the Bangma Farm atop Williams Hill in Uxbridge. And now with picnic benches, fresh Ice cream-even a dozen or so cattle grazing in the fields as the sun sets on the Valley, the setting provides an idyllic, almost dreamlike experience.
With the renovations completed, the Bangma's have initiated plans to host a number of community events to celebrate the new facility and its place in continuing the preservation of the Blackstone River Valley. Plans are in the works for antique car "Cruise Nights" during the summer and an annual Fall Festival which will feature tractor shows, hayrides, ice cream and food samples, pony rides for the kids, and more - all in the open expanse of the historic 90-acre farm.
"We've have made some changes, but we've preserved our family's heritage and maintained the land as a working farm," says Dale. "That was our goal, and it's everyone's desire to see the farm continue, now the future really looks really promising. We care too much to see it go."
So consider yourself invited to visit Dale and Pamela, enjoy a cone of delicious ice cream, watch the animals as they graze the open farmland, and just maybe you'll catch an absolutely gorgeous sunset.
