Perhaps the greatest compliment a business can receive is recognition by the consumer for a quality product served or exceptional service. Sure, "awards" are given out all the time, but when the "voters" decide, that is the consumers of your product, the credibility level is quite high. In a 2005 Worcester Magazine reader survey, Atchue Opticians in Millbury was recognized as the "people's choice" for the quality products they provide, expertise in the industry and superior customer service.
Charlie Atchue has been in business quite a while, and at the same Grafton St., Millbury location he opened in the summer of 1981. Having just graduated from Worcester State College with a degree in Business Administration, Charlie had a head full of dreams. His expertise was in Ophthalmic (pronounced op-thal-mic) technology, which is the design and fabrication of lenses, and the manufacturing and dispensing of eye wear by prescription.
How he came to select the location is a story in itself. "You know, it was just by chance. I was in the middle of stalled negotiations for a location north of Worcester. The property owner had missed one renovation deadline after another. While riding my bicycle to my Uncle's house in Grafton, I saw the "for rent" sign and phone number in the window. I made a call, met the landlord that same day and on a handshake I rented the space." Six weeks later Atchue Opticians opened for business.
Charlie learned quickly what his customers wanted and what the market would bear. His vision was to become known for "Value Eyewear" - low prices, quality professional workmanship, and personal service.
The times may have changed in the nearly quarter century since the Atchue Optician doors swung open, and yes, there have been ups and downs over the years; But the results speak volumes. Atchue Opticians has built a strong and loyal customer base, recognized not only by the public, but the industry as well for superior customer service and in accurately filling each prescription.
Moreover, Atchue Opticians carries a complete line of prescription and non-prescription sunglasses, safety glasses, sport goggles, contact lenses, and eyewear for children. "I've always liked to keep things simple" Charlie says. "We provide value, accuracy, comfort, and customer satisfaction in a casual, friendly atmosphere. And that's what we'll continue to do."
